Maxine, age 91, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at Bickford of Portage. She was born September 5, 1928 to Leland and Leola (Cutler) Marr. Max graduated from State High School and Bronson Hospital School of Nursing. She worked in the Nursing field for 40 years as a Registered Nurse. Her compassion for people never diminished. She was always very concerned about her friends at Bickford. The nurse in her never ended.
Max loved her church, Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. She was active as an usher, member of United Methodist Women, worked in the food pantry in her younger years and active in the “Over the Chapel Hill Gang.” She belonged to the quilting circle where beautiful quilts were made and donated to many different charities.
Max was married to Gene Zimmer for almost 60 years. Gene preceded her in death in September of 2011. Max and Gene traveled extensively to many places including to China in the 1970s. Maxine was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother Leland, Jr. and her beloved sister Audrey Dykehouse.
Maxine is survived by her two sons; Joel (Julie) Zimmer of Portage and Dr. Mark (Marsha) Zimmer of Kawkawlin. Maxine loved her five grandchildren. Jonathan Zimmer, Emily (Chris) Rousch, Jay (Meg) Zimmer, Jamie (Jason) Haruska, James (Kristen) Zimmer, along with her one great granddaughter, Ruby. Maxine treasured the memories of grandpa and grandma, the grandkids, and her beloved dog P-Nut playing for hours in the backyard. Hobbies that Max enjoyed were bird watching and she always enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers.
Visitation will be on Saturday, December 28th from 10-11 at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 7028 Oakland Dr., Portage. A Celebration of Maxine’s Life will follow at the church beginning at 11:00. Lunch will be provided immediately after the service.
