Vurlah M. Gwilliams (Stone), age 95, of Otsego, MI passed away comfortably in her daughter's home near Marcellus, Mi. Jan. 2, 2017 after struggling with dementia for several years. Vurlah was born September 11, 1921 in her Watson Corners farmhouse of Allegan County. Her parents were Beatrice and Jesse Stone. Vurlah had four siblings preceding her in death, Max, Lloyd, Beverly Polious and Gertrude Roempke. After attending high school together Vurlah married Charles Gwilliams in January, 1946 when he returned home from WWII. Charles preceded her in death in 2011. She is survived by her three children, Lynn Steil (Mike), Dennis and Kevin. She has four grand children, Jesse, Christian, Erin Mohney (Jeff), and Kirby Steil. Her grandson Michael preceded her in death in 2010. She has 7 great grandchildren.
Vurlah and Charlie made their home in Watson for over 60 years. Vurlah worked as a telephone operator in Prairieville and a bookkeeper before she married Charlie. She served on the Elm Hill School Board for more than 8 years. For many years she was a member of the Busy Workers, a local charitable organization. She enjoyed teaching ceramics in her home for many years. She was also a steadfast supporter of her husband Charlie's Lions Club activities and fundraisers. Much of their travels involved Lions Club National and International conventions. However, her favorite place to vacation was in the upper peninsula of Michigan where the entire family spent many years fishing and sight-seeing.
As per her request, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at Hicks Cemetery in the Spring. In leu of flowers contributions in memory of Vurlah may be made to Southern Care Hospice.
