Zaida L. Medd

Zaida L. Medd passed away peacefully on December 29, 2011, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Born in Saginaw on May 15, 1916, she graduated from South Bend Central High School, attended Albion College, and married Wallace G. Medd in 1936. After a few years, they moved their young family to a farm in Marcellus, Michigan, where they raised eight children. Zaida was preceded in death by her husband Wallace, daughters Janice Reynolds and Priscilla Ruff Springer, grandson Daniel Medd, great-grandson Andrew Shugars, her parents, Guy and Margaret Lamb, two sisters, and one brother. Zaida is survived by children Robert (Doris) Medd of Bigfoot, Texas, Martha (Elwyn) Shugars of Marcellus, Lucynda Rhinehart of Van Nuys, California, Becky Cornwell of Kalamazoo, Debbie (Pete) Hartman of Riverview, Florida, and Don (Marsha) Medd of Marcellus, 20 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Zaida loved and enjoyed her family. She was an avid reader, an award-winning quilter, a skilled bridge player, an accomplished knitter, and a fantastic cook. She enjoyed gardening, was a long-time Notre Dame fan, and spent many hours watching college football and basketball both in the stands and on television. During her lifetime, she had been an active member of the Methodist Church, the Portage Senior Center, and Wyndham West Ladies' Group. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and Past Worthy Matron of Chapter #167 in Marcellus. At Zaida's request, cremation has taken place, and a private memorial service will be held at Avink Funeral Home in Schoolcraft. Friends and family, please share a memory online at www.avinkcremation.com. Memorials may be directed to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or the Marcellus United Methodist Church.
